The brightest member of the Scooby-gang isn’t done solving mysteries. According to Comicbook, the team behind Velma is already preparing to start work on season two of the show. The first season made its debut earlier this year and, unfortunately, the Scooby-Doo spinoff attracted a lot of controversy during the first few weeks.
According to Comicbook, the update on the new season comes as relief to those who work on Velma, after all, the show has been labeled as controversial since the beginning. The show achieved record audiences, but it also earned mixed reviews from critics, and audiences spoke against it for its mean-spirited take on Scooby-Doo.
The cast of the show includes Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Project) voicing the main character Velma, Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians, The Hustlers) voicing Daphne, while Glenn Howerton (The Mindy Project, How It Ends) would be voicing Fred and Sam Richardson (Hocus Pocus 2, HouseBroken) would be voicing Shaggy. Other cast members are Jane Lynch (Glee, Final Space) as Donna; Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars, You) as Brenda; and Debby Ryan (Jessie, Insatiable) as Krista, among others. One of the actors included in the announcement is Frank Welker (Star Wars Resistance, Curious George) who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, has voiced Fred in almost every animated version of the character since its beginnings in 1969. Welker has also voiced Scooby in several productions.
Ahead of the premiere of the show Kaling announced to the fans that in this iteration, Velma is South Asian. More specifically, Velma is Indian in the new show. Ahead of its release, it was announced that Velma was going to be gruesome, unlike the many iterations of Scooby Doo. Kaling revealed before the premiere an image from the show where the audience can see how a South Asian Velma comes across a new mystery when she finds a young woman with the top of her head sliced off. Unlike other iterations of the mystery-solving gang, Velma is aimed at an older audience and includes more gory scenes.
Kaling will also executive produce Velma with her frequent collaborator Charlie Grandy, (The Office, The Mindy Project) who will also serve as showrunner, Howard Klein (Jessica Jones, Ordinary Joe), and Sam Register (Harley Quinn, Teen Titans Go!) who is also the president of Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network.
The new season of Velma is still in pre-production. All episodes of the first season of the animated show are available to stream on HBO Max.
