Netflix Releases Trailer for New Series ‘The Keepers’

In 2015, everybody swarmed to Netflix’s documentary series Making a Murderer, which followed the case and murder trial of Steven Avery in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin and provided searing criticism of the American justice system along the way. This spring, Netflix will premiere a new series that appears to be a promising follow-up to the largely addictive Making a Murderer.

Deadline reported this morning on Netflix’s first trailer for their new series The Keepers. The series will recount the story of the 1970 murder of Sister Cathy, a nun working in the Catholic community of Baltimore, Maryland. The series’ tagline points to the question at the heart of it all: “Who killed Sister Cathy?” However, the trailer is candid about the fact that the documentary series will not limit itself to merely telling Sister Cathy’s story.

Footage included in the trailer implies that Sister Cathy was murdered for uncovering numerous instances of abuse in the community’s church and affiliated school. One woman in the trailer declares, “The story is not the nun’s killing. The story is the cover-up of the nun’s story.”

The Keepers will include interviews with various members of the Baltimore community in a search for the truth behind the murder of the beloved Sister Cathy and in efforts to uncover the complicated conspiracy behind her death. Directory Ryan White told Deadline that the story works to reveal those within the church and government that “at best, dropped the ball over the last 45 years – and, at worst, covered it up.”

The Keepers will be a 7-part documentary series, with all episodes premiering May 19th on Netflix.
