It’s been three weeks since the cancellation announcement of Wonder Man. Despite the series being renewed for a second season, the series was canceled with no explanation.
On Instagram, the podcast series Fresh Air had a interview with the Wonder Man lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Man on Fire, Actors Unscripted) where he shared his thoughts on the cancellation. The podcast also mentions that Wonder Man is a part of a pattern of black-led Marvel projects that have been canceled, such as Blade, Armor Wars and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The actor issued this statement regarding the series being canceled: “When you look at the history of those projects and when you put them all together, there’s no way around it. It does not look good. That’s what it looks like. So I’d be, you know, willfully blind if I chose not to make that observation. I’m always interested in the truth, and I’m always interested in what is true for me and what is true for me is that in the case of Wonder Man, I actually don’t know the truth of what happened. I’ve heard things about viewership. What I would say is that if that is the case, my perspective is that when you see Black-led niche projects, I think they need a little bit more time to cook, because I think Black audiences usually find out and gravitate to the niche projects a little bit slower.”
Wonder Man is a series that follows a small-time actor named Simon Williams whose goal in life is to land his dream role. However, he has to hide his superpowers in order to try and get the role. Meanwhile, a shady government agent is using another actor to try and get Simon arrested because he believes that he is a threat that needs to be contained. The series was well-noted and given a season renewal. However, shortly after, the series was canceled, leaving fans to voice their outrage with the news. The showrunner Andrew Guest (The Hawk, Wonder Man) even went on to TikTok to voice his thoughts on the cancellation.
The series is still available for viewing on Disney+. Part of the interview can be viewed on Instagram below.
