‘Law & Order: SVU’ Showrunner Discusses Potential Christopher Meloni Return

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit showrunner Michele Fazekas (Gen V, Agent Carter) says she hopes to continue bringing Christopher Meloni (Oz, Law & Order: Organized Crime) back to the long-running NBC drama whenever possible, according to Entertainment Weekly. In the report Fazekas said she would use Meloni “as much as he wants,” while acknowledging both the actor’s busy schedule and the continued popularity of the relationship between Stabler and Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay (ER, My Mom Jayne).

Meloni originally starred as Detective Elliot Stabler on SVU from 1999 until his departure in 2011 before later returning to the franchise through crossover appearances and the spin-off series Law & Order: Organized Crime. Although Organized Crime was recently canceled by the network, Fazekas suggested the door remains open for future Stabler appearances on SVU.

The Benson and Stabler partnership has remained one of the defining relationships in the Law & Order franchise for more than two decades. Fans have continued closely following every reunion between the characters since Meloni’s return in 2021 during a crossover tied to the launch of Organized Crime.

Entertainment Weekly also noted that Fazekas addressed the challenges of coordinating future appearances, especially as Meloni prepares to star in Hulu’s upcoming NFL drama The Land from Dan Fogelman (This Is Us, Paradise). Despite scheduling difficulties, the showrunner reportedly emphasized her interest in continuing Benson and Stabler’s story in a meaningful way rather than through quick cameos.

The possibility of additional reunions comes shortly after the cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime, which concluded after five seasons. mxdwn had previously covered the cancellation, highlighting the fans’ uncertainty surrounding Stabler’s future in the franchise.

That coverage reported NBCUniversal executives reportedly stated the spin-off had “run its course,” though fan interest in Elliot Stabler’s future within the franchise remains strong. The latest comments from Fazekas suggest the SVU creative team remains aware of the continued audience interest surrounding Benson and Stabler’s relationship as the series moves toward another season.

While no official return plans have been announced, the possibility of future appearances from Meloni remains open as Law & Order: SVU continues on NBC.
