Jodie Whittaker Says Goodbye to ‘Doctor Who’ in BBC’s Centenary Special

It has been announced through the official Doctor Who website that Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch, Trust Me) will be returning to her role as The Doctor one last time in the BBC’s Centenary Special. After three seasons of playing fan-favorite character The Doctor, Whittaker has decided to say goodbye to the sci-fi series.

Even though it is sad to see Whittaker go, her last episode is set to include many returning characters, both allies, and foes. Among the returning villains is The Master, an old enemy of The Doctor. In this special, The Master is being played by Sacha Dhawan (Iron Fist, The Great). Other returning villains include the Daleks, sworn enemies of The Doctor, and the Cyberman, one of humanity’s biggest threats in the Doctor Who universe.

It was also announced through the official Doctor Who website the return of two companions who have not been part of the show since they left decades ago. One of the two companions is Tegan Jovanka played by Janet Fielding (Prisoner Zero, Doctor Who). She was part of the show during the first half of the 80s. Back then she was the companion to the Fourth Doctor played by Tom Baker (Little Britain, The Beeps), and the Fifth Doctor played by Peter Davidson (Gentleman Jack, The Larkins).

The other companion who has decided to return to Doctor Who is Ace played by Sophie Aldred (Gentrification, Peter Rabbit). Aldred was part of the series during the late 80s. Her character traveled with the Seventh Doctor played by Sylvester McCoy (The Hobbit trilogy, Apartness).

Doctor Who follows The Doctor, a Time Lord who travels through time and space on the TARDIS and often has companions traveling with them. There have been many Doctors throughout the years but Whittaker is the first woman to take on the role. With this episode, her time as The Doctor comes to an end.

It has also been announced who will replace Whittaker as the next Doctor. Actor Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) is set to make his debut as The Doctor soon.

The special episode is set to premiere sometime in Fall 2022. Don’t forget to watch the teaser below.
