According to ScreenRant, the director of the Disney+ animated Marvel series X-Men ’97 addresses the fate of the series, possibly a fifth season. Series director and producer Larry Houston (Xiaolin Chronicles, Community) speaks about how long the animated series could run while the second season of the series is currently airing. The series has gained a ton of popularity on the streaming platform, and it has already been renewed for a third and fourth season; it’s expected to have yearly releases going forward.
As per ScreenRant, Houston, while talking to The Direct, stated how long the series could last, addressing the possibility of a fifth season and beyond. He expressed how a total of five to six seasons feels right, citing fewer episodes per season in contrast to what X-Men: The Animated Series had. However, getting five or more seasons would allow for more room in terms of character growth and a better-paced story.
“I would say, if they can at least match what I did [with the original series], five seasons, it would be great. Maybe six. But everything depends on the audience and how well-received the stories that they’re doing are. With my original series, we had 13 episodes per season.” Houston said via ScreenRant. “Streaming is only like eight or nine, so their storytelling is more compressed than ours. We could stretch things out and let characterizations of situations breathe more than the streaming, it’s just more smaller. So if X-Men ’97 could do something like at least match what we did for five seasons, that would allow a lot more stories to be explored. Because there’s been 24, 25 more years of other stories that I never touched, that this current X-Men ’97 production is exploring.”
X-Men ’97 picks up where the original series left off as it is set one year after Professor X leaves Earth; the X-Men enter a new dangerous era filled with rising anti-mutant prejudice and the absence of their greatest mentor.
X-Men ’97 is available to stream on Disney+.
