Cinemax Orders Bruce Lee-Inspired Pilot ‘Warrior’ From Justin Lin and Jonathan Tropper

Cinemax is adding another crime drama to its stable of shows.

According to Deadline, the HBO sibling has ordered a pilot for martial arts/crime drama Warrior. The series, based on work written by Bruce Lee, is executive produced by Justin Lin (Fast & FuriousStar Trek Beyond). Lin is also likely to direct the Jonathan Tropper (Banshee) written pilot.

The Bruce Lee and Justin Lin passion project takes place post-Civil War and follows a young martial artist, his first time in the US, as he gets embroiled in San Francisco’s brutal Chinatown Tong wars. Along with Lin, Warrior is executive produced by Shannon Lee (Bruce Lee’s daughter), Tropper, Troy Craig Poon, and Danielle Woodrow.

The idea for Warrior was originally brought to Cinemax by Lin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment and Shannon Lee in early 2015. Perfect Storm Entertainment has been partnered with Bruce Lee Enterprises and Shannon Lee to develop projects for television since 2013. The series is based on a collection of handwritten notes from Bruce Lee that were found by his daughter.

Justin Lin, though having quite a good run in movies, has also been busy in TV. Lin is an executive producer on CBS’ Scorpion, which stars Elyes Gabel, Katharine McPhee, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jadyn Wong, Ari Stidham, and Robert Patrick. Lin also directed the Scorpion pilot, and he also directed the first two episodes of HBO’s True Detective season two.
