According to Variety, Alessio Liguori (In the Trap, The Boat) is set to direct Moriarty Rising: A Sherlock Holmes Tale in Turin, Italy. The project that will be underway is written by Oliver Draiv (The Empresario, Into the Wind) and will be exploring the origins of Sherlock Holmes’ greatest adversary against the backdrop of modern-day Turin.
As per Variety, the series will be a dual-format production that will function both as a premium vertical series and a standalone feature film. It will be produced by Former Prodigy Media, the production company led by Christopher Knight (The Brady Bunch, Toon in with Me). Two-time Emmy Award-nominated producer Phil Viardo ( A Lie to Die For, The Inventor), feature film producer Rob McGillivray (By Any Means, The Outer Threat) of Tip-Top Productions, and executive producer Jonathan Miller (Sensitive Skin, Net Playhouse) of Alation Media will also be part of the production.
Variety reports that the project is being produced in Italy through a partnership with Milan-based Greif Produktion SRL, led by producers Gianluca Lazzaroni (The Italian Job, Hard Skills), who served as production supervisor on Paramount Pictures’ and Fabio Canepa (Gorizia Castle, The Winnowing). The series is the third in a slate of dual-format titles developed, financed and produced through a partnership between Former Prodigy Media’s commercial division Marquee Content, Portrait Pictures, a sister company to Tip-Top Productions, and Alation Media.
“Together, we are building a pipeline of elevated dual-format productions that don’t ask audiences, or platforms to choose between quality and format,” said McGillivray via Variety. “The goal is content that performs at the highest level for both premium vertical platforms and traditional film distribution.”
The dual-format film and premium vertical series Moriarty Rising: A Sherlock Holmes Tale will explores the origins and early rise to power of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous archenemy, Professor James Moriarty.
