‘Wednesday’ Returning to Netflix for Season Two

Wednesday has been renewed for season two, and will be returning to Netflix, according to Deadline. The series is the third Netflix original to cross one-billion hours viewed, dethroning Dahmer as the number one spot during its premiere and surpassing Stranger Things 4 as the most viewed English-language series, via Deadline. Wednesday debuted with 341.23 million hours viewed in the first week, and 411.29 million hours viewed in the second, according to Tudum. The series is also credited with starting a viral TikTok trend, where users mimicked main character Wednesday’s iconically peculiar Rave’N dance to Lady Gaga’s song Bloody Mary, propelling the series’ popularity even further.

Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega (The Fallout, X), follows the oldest Addams family  child, Wednesday Addams, as new student at Nevermore while she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents. Ortega has come to admire her character Wednesday, telling Tudum that, “she sticks to her guns, and she’s not out to please anybody. Which, as someone who used to be an immense people pleaser, I really respect.”

The news surrounding Wednesday’s season two renewal was previously unknown, as MGM Studios produced the series and was bought by Amazon back in March of 2022 resulting in the unanswered question of whether Wednesday would be returning to Netflix or Prime Video, according to Forbes. However, at the time the deal was made Amazon expressed that they did not have plans to make all MGM content exclusive to Prime Video, via Forbes

Netflix has released Wednesday’s season two announcement, where Wednesday recaps the eventful season one and acknowledges her growing fanbase. “I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet.” The announcement includes Lady Gaga’s Bloody Mary, pointing to the Wednesday inspired TikTok trend. “It’s been pure torture. Thank you,” Wednesday says in the announcement.

Showrunners Miles Millar (Smallville, Spider-Man 2) and Alfred “Al” Gough (Smallville, Shanghai Noon) tell Tudum, “It’s been incredible to create a show that’s connected with people across the world. We’re thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into Season 2.”

Alongside Ortega, the series stars Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Jamie McShane (Bloodline, Gone Girl), Percy Hynes White (The Gifted, Cast No Shadow), Hunter Doohan (Your Honor, Truth Be Told), Emma Myers (Girl in the Basement, Dead of Night), Joy Sunday (The Beta Test, Dear White People), Naomi J. Ogawa (Skylines, Assassin), Moosa Mostafa (The Last Bus, Nativity Rocks!), Georgie Farmer (Evermoor, Treadstone), Riki Lindhome (Knives Out, The Last House on the Left), Christina Ricci (Addams Family Values, Black Snake Moan), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago, The Mask of Zorro), Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights, Traffic), Fred Arimisen (Big Mouth, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy), and Isaac Ordonez (A Wrinkle in Time, Husky).

Wednesday season one is available to stream on Netflix.
