Stranger Things took the world by storm when it premiered in 2016. According to Deadline, its creators Matt and Ross Duffer will receive the Visionary Tribute at the upcoming Gotham Television Awards.
With Stranger Things, Matt (Hidden, Wayward Pines) and Ross Duffer (Hidden, Wayward Pines) built a world entirely their own and reimagined the possibilities of event storytelling. The Visionary Tribute recognizes boundary-pushing work that will inspire the next generation, and Matt and Ross have created a defining cultural force that reshaped the television landscape. We are proud to celebrate their singular contribution at this year’s Gotham Television Awards,” said Gotham Executive Director Jeffery Sharp via Deadline.
The Gotham Television Awards will release a full list of honorees for special awards in the upcoming weeks. Competitive category nominations will come out on April 28th.
Stranger Things takes inspiration from 80s small-town horror. Its first several seasons captured the hearts of audiences with both nostalgia and a charming cast, particularly from some of the younger members. It would go on to receive 12 Emmys and 57 nominations during its run. Its last and final season received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. According to mxdwn, the final season would become the subject of the viral conformity gate, the fan theory that the final episode was actually a fake, and the characters were still under Vecna’s spell.
The Duffer Brothers recently unveiled the spin-off Stranger Things: Tales From 85. Outside of Hawkins, Indiana, they recently executive-produced Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen and The Boroughs. Two genre series that have gathered a significant amount of hype in 2026. There are also rumors of another Stranger Things spin-off, which will take place in once sleepy, now ritzy New York Beach town of Montauk. In August of 2024, the Duffer Brothers left their previous home of Netflix to sign a four-year deal at Paramount.
