‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Receives Series Order from CBS All Access

CBS All Access has definitely has given Star Trek room to live long and prosper. The streaming platform has given a series order to new Star Trek spin-off called Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, according to Variety and Deadline. The show will follow the lives of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck). Mount (Hell on Wheels), Romijn (X-Men), and Peck (1o Things I Hate About You) were fan-favorites on Star Trek: Discovery when introduced in season 2.

This is not the only recent work CBS has done surrounding the Star Trek franchise. With the addition of Strange New Worlds there are now five shows within the shared universe on All Access: Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Short Treks, and the adult animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.  These series have done well with Picard scheduled for second season and Discovery launching season 3 later this year. Strange New World will surround the life of Pike, Number One and Spock exploring the galaxy a decade before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, providing an enhanced exposition to these characters.

“When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they boarded ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ last season, we meant it,” Alex Kurtzman, writer of series premiere, said to Variety. “These iconic characters have a deep history in ‘Star Trek’ canon, yet so much of their stories have yet to be told. With Akiva and Henry at the helm, the Enterprise, its crew and its fans are in for an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the ‘Star Trek’ universe.”

Kurtzman (The Island) joined Jenny Lumet (The Mummy) with Akiva Goldsman (Titans) to executive produce the series, along with Henry Alonso Myers (Ugly Betty), Heather Kadin (Sleepy Hallow), Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Co-executive producers include Aaron Baiers (Instinct), Akela Cooper (Luke Cage) and Davy Perez (American Crime).

“This is a dream come true, literally,” said Goldsman to Variety. “I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s. I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex, Henry and the fine folks at CBS.”

Discovery‘s season 3 will debut later this year, as for Strange New World there is no word on a release date due to COVID-19 pandemic. Watch the trailer that displays these stars announcing the new series below:
