X-Men 97 has just gives its most iconic character, Wolverine, voiced by Cal Dodd (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Rescue Heroes), most brutal story in the latest episode. According to Comicbook, the episode titled “Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs” showcases Wolverine and Morph, voiced by John Paul Karliak (The Mighty Nein, Fate/Grand Carnival) forming a ragtag team with former enemies into taking down a deadly invention of the government.
Reported by Comicbook, the new project in question are the Brood, which inspired by the Xenomorphs in Alien, and shared a similar ability, where they lay eggs in the victim, but there is no chest exploding instead the subject under goes a shocking transformation and turning them into brood hybrid, which is able to possess the ability of the user. It is Wolverine who is the unfortunate target and gets turn into a full brood, and goes on to hunt his allies. It was only after the team has injected him with adamantium that Wolverine was able to fully repel the Brood.
While the 1990s cartoon largely avoided this storyline because of its unsettling themes, X-Men ’97 embraces the horror without losing sight of its characters. Stated by Comicbook, the Brood storyline allow Wolverine to return back to his root of being a survivor, and will endure any kind of unimaginable pain to protect his teammates. Just like back in the original series, Brood serve as a formidable opponent for the X-Men, because unlike regular villains they can’t be defeated with strength alone, but with unconventional methods.
With four more episodes left in the second season, it remains unknown on how the separate groups will converge the final cinematic battle against Apocalypse , voiced by Ross Marquand (Invincible, What If..?)
