The Heathers reboot just found another star. TVLine reported on Thursday that Selma Blair is set to join the Paramount Network television series. Blair will recur in the role of Jade, “a rough-edged, gold-digging stripper who is married to the 82-year-old father of Heather Duke.”
The upcoming series is based off of the 1988 film that stars Stranger Things actress Winona Ryder as Veronica, with Lisanne Falk, Shannen Doherty, and Kim Walker as the Heathers. Mr. Robot‘s Christian Slater appears at J.D., Veronica’s crazy love interest, in the film. Heathers begins with Veronica clearly hating her friend group, the Heathers, but when J.D. enters into her life an extreme series of events lead to murder and hilarity. The film inspired an Off-Broadway show of the same name in 2014.
Blair took to Twitter last night to confirm the news. She captioned picture of herself in character with, “Do I look like step mother Theresa? #heathers #paramounttv2018.” The quote references a line from the 1988 film.
The network describes the upcoming series as a “pitch-black comedy anthology set in the present day.” Heathers will follow Veronica, played by Under the Dome’s Grace Victoria Cox, as she deals with an intense friend group that are referred to as the “Heathers”. The Heathers will be played by newcomers Melanie Field, Brendan Scannell and Jasmine Matthews. Quantico‘s James Scully will play JD.
It was previously announced the Beverly Hills, 90210 actress Shannen Doherty will appear as a guest star in the series. Doherty appeared in the role of Heather Duke in the original film. While her character’s name is currently unnamed, she is expected to act as a “pivotal” part of the series.
The Heathers reboot was originally scheduled to air on TV Land, but is now expected to air on Paramount Network. While the network may have a new name, it will actually be the new Spike TV beginning in January. The series is slated to premiere in 2018, though an exact date has not yet been confirmed.
Blair has made a name for herself both on television and in films. She starred as Dr. Kate Wales in FX’s Anger Management and as Kim in NBC’s short-lived Kath & Kim. She has made guest appearances on Friends, Web Therapy, Portlandia, and American Crime Story. Her film credits include Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde, A Guy Thing, In Good Company, In Their Skin, and Mothers and Daughters.
