Rian Johnson’s ‘Poker Face’ Get’s Season Two Renewal on Peacock

After almost three weeks of being on the air, it was recently announced that Poker Face would get season two renewal on Peacock. According to Variety, the NBCUniversal streaming platform is planning on bringing new episodes for the critically-acclaimed detective show.

The first season of the week-by-week murder mystery series was crafted by Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Knives Out) and released on Peacock on January 26th. The show so far has garnered many views and high praise with a score of 99% on the Rotten Tomatoes tomato meter, an 80% audience score, and an 8.1/10 on IMDb. Millions of people also got the opportunity to see what this show is about in its most recent Superbowl AdThe season two announcement comes with a lot of hype and with episodes still releasing every Thursday. The 10-episode season will premiere its seventh episode tomorrow on February 16th and continue up to March 9.

With its major success coming early, Poker Face is one of a handful of Peacock original shows getting a season two renewal. That list includes Bel-AirDr. Death, and Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin amongst others. Johnson works with Nora Zuckerman (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Haven) and Lilla Zuckerman (Prodigal Son, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as co-showrunners along with both executive producer and main lead Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll, Orange is the New Black). According to Deadline, Poker Face is produced by Johnson’s T-Street Productions and MRC Television, along with Lyonne’s Animal Pictures.

Among the cast to join Lyonne include Ron Perlman (Quest of Fire, Hellboy) and Benjamin Bratt (Demolition Man, DMZ), as well as guest stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, The Dark Knight Rises) and Adrien Brody (The Pianist, Midnight in Paris). The singer and songwriter John Darnielle made his acting debut in the series during episode four and has this to say about his long-term working relationship with Rian Johnson on Stereogum, “…over in Chapel Hill, they were showing a movie called Brick…the music was credited to the Hospital Bomber Experience (Johnson’s cousin). Now that’s a reference to a song of mine called ‘The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton.’ I pointed to the screen and said, ‘Hey, that’s a Mountain Goats reference!’ So I wrote to him and told him I saw the reference, and we’ve stayed in touch.”

Variety’s chief television critic Daniel D’Addario praised the series, saying it “allows an established star the time and space to crack a new sort of case, that of how to evolve a familiar persona and bring fans along for the ride.”

Similarly, Susan Rovner, Chairman of Entertainment Content for Television and Streaming at NBCUniversal, has this to say, “Poker Face is one of those rare, undeniable shows that we all fell in love with from the start, but the critical acclaim and viewer response has been beyond our wildest dreams.”
