Reboot of ‘Kate & Allie’ In Development at NBC

A reboot of the classic sitcom Kate & Allie is in the works at NBC, according to TVLine. The original sitcom aired for six seasons on CBS from 1984 to 1989.

The original series follows Kate and Allie, two single mothers who raise their children together, living in the same household. Kate & Allie‘s logline reads that “through their unconventional arrangement, the two prove romance isn’t necessary to be a successful woman and mother,” via TVLine. It’s as if the women are “sister wives, only they don’t have to pretend to love the same man with bad hair,” reads the logline.

NBC has issued the updated reboot a put pilot, via TVLine. A put pilot has a larger likelihood of going to series, but poses a higher financial risk if it does not.

Erica Oyama (producer, Fresh Off the Boat) and Nahnatchka Khan (director, Always Be My Maybe) will executive produce the series. The pair has most recently worked on NBC’s upcoming comedy Young Rock, a partly autobiographical sitcom based on the life of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Oyama has written the Kate & Allie reboot. According to Deadline, Khan’s production company Fierce Baby will be producing the series along with Propagate (production company) and Universal Television.

In addition to Oyama and Khan, Ben Silverman (producer, The Office), Peter Principato (producer, Central Intelligence), and Jen Carreras (producer, Valley Trash) will be producing.

Since the project has just entered development, there is no cast attached to the series. In the original, Susan Saint James (McMillian & Wife) played Kate and Jane Curtin (3rd Rock From the Sun) played Allie.

News of a Kate & Allie reboot arrives the same day ABC has issued a pilot order to Saladin Patterson (producer, Psych) for his reboot of The Wonder Years. Other classic shows with reboots in the works include NBC’s Night Court and Zorro, via Deadline.
