ABC has picked up three comedy pilots for the 2021 pilot season, including a reboot of The Wonder Years and a series entitled Maggie as well as an untitled series hailing from Regina Hicks (Camp Rock), as Variety reports. The former series began development in July and will be based on the 1988 drama which took place in the 1960s while Maggie will be based on the short film from Tim Curcio (Behind The Walls).
The Wonder Years reboot series will follow a black middle-class family from Montgomery, Alabama during the 1960s, which Variety describes as being “The Wonder Years for them too.” Lee Daniels (Empire) and Saladin Patterson (One Flight Stand) will executive produce while The Wonder Years star Fred Savage (The Princess Bride) is slated to direct the pilot and executive produce. The upcoming ABC series hopes to put modern twist on a classic show by furthering racial diversity in the TV industry. Meanwhile, Maggie will follow a woman coping with the uprooting of her life following the revelation that she is a psychic and possesses the ability to see everyone’s future. The series hails from Maggie Mull (Family Guy). Evan Hayes (Free Solo) will also executive produce. Hicks’ untitled project will center around three sorority sisters who lose touch after graduating and “reunite during a pivotal point in their lives,” as Deadline explains.
ABC’s new pilot orders join the list of other recently announced pilot pickups by the network, including Queens and Epic, as well as the pickup of an untitled comedy from Chris Lloyd (Modern Family), starring Alec Baldwin (Beetlejuice) and Kelsey Grammer (Fraiser).
