USA’s comedy Psych has been renewed for an eighth season. Premiering in 2006, season seven was just rapped up, and USA has ordered more episodes. It is official that Psych will be back… for what may be its last season.
The series follows snarky psychic detective Shawn Spencer, played by James Roday. This detective uses his keen observational skills and the pharmaceutical knowledge of his best friend Gus, played by Dule Hill, to solve crimes. Timothy Omundson and Maggie Lawson play the by-the-book detectives who are constantly exasperated by the psychic’s antics.
Screenrant reports that originally Psych would return for eight more episodes, notably shorter than the other seasons. However, recently there was an order for five additional episodes. Season eight would then be a total of 13 episodes, still just short of a regular Psych season.
One reason that Psych might be coming to a close involves star Maggie Lawson. Zap2it reports that Lawson has filmed a pilot for a new comedy titled Back in the Game. She will be able to return for some episodes in season eight. However, if her pilot gets picked up, Lawson may have to kiss her Psych role goodbye.
Lawson’s character, however, has been a part of the show since the second episode and has become a staple in Psych. One has to wonder what the show would be like without her.
This all depends on if the ratings stay strong (as they have been) and if Lawson’s new series is picked up.
