‘Outmatched’ Canceled After Freshman Season by Fox

Fox has opted to cancel the new sitcom Outmatched after one season, according to Variety. The show joins dramas Deputy and Almost Family as shows that Fox recently canceled after their freshman season. The network announced on the same day to renew Last Man Standing and The Resident. Fox also plans to pick up both seasons of LA’s Finest and wait until next fall further away from the COVID-19 pandemic to release dramas Filthy Rich and neXt. It is still unknown if the network’s other freshman show, Prodigal Son will continue for a second season.

Outmatched surrounds a working-class family from New Jersey raising genius children. The series starred Maggie Lawson (Gamer) as Kay, Jason Biggs (American Pie) as Mike, Connor Kalopsis (Artificial) as Brian, Ashley Boettcher (Aliens in the Attic) as Nicole, Jack Stanton (The Mick) as Marc, Oakley Bull (Beautiful Boy) as Leila, Tisha Campbell (Harley Quinn) as Rita, and Finesse Mitchell (The Comebacks) as Irwin.

Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television produced the show, with Lon Zimmet (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Happy Endings) as the creator and executive producer. The show had a similar narrative of that of Malcom in the Middle, a classic Fox sitcom which ran from 2000-2006, however, had ratings that did not justify a season two. According to VarietyOutmatched averaged just a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.3 million viewers in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings.
