Oscar Nominee Colman Domingo Discusses The Delay For Season Three of HBO’s ‘Euphoria’

It’s been roughly two years since HBO’s Euphoria completed its second season. Amidst rumors of alleged onset drama and last summer’s writers’ strike, the show is set to return in 2025. According to Deadline, cast member Colman Domingo (Rustin, Fear the Walking Dead) enlightened fans with an update on the third season’s progress.

In an interview with GQDomingo revealed the series’ delay is due to creator Sam Levinson’s tedious reshaping of the story to reflect our current world.

“[Sam is] a person who writes and rewrites and writes and rewrites again, because I think he’s wrestling with what’s important,” Domingo said in the GQ interview. “He’s responding immediately to what the ills of the world are. I know that the one thing I can tell you is that he’s very much interested in the existential question of who we are right now. Our souls. That’s what he wants to figure out with season three.” Domingo stars as  Ali, a recovering addict, and sponsor to the show’s lead, Rue.

Based on an Israeli show created by Daphna Levin (Take Away, In Therapy) and Ron Leshem (No Man’s Land, Valley of Tears), Euphoria follows the complicated lives of teenagers at a southern California high school. Our protagonist is Zendaya’s (Challengers, Dune: Part Two) Rue, a young GenZer whose anxiety disorder and the loss of her father lead her down a path of depression and substance misuse. In her orbit are other teens struggling to cope with parental abandonment, identity crises, and heartbreak in an era where pills and potions have been prescribed to temporarily cover the wound.

Despite the hiatus, Levinson and the cast have been quite busy. Last summer, Levinson’s The Idol premiered to poor ratings and even poorer reviews. The show was allegedly pulled an episode early and eventually canceled. Domingo earned himself an Oscar nomination for his lead role in Netflix’s biopic Rustin, centering on Bayard Rustin, the gay Black civil rights activist behind Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington. Zendaya converted her second lead actress Emmy for Euphoria and appeared in this month’s blockbuster sequel, Dune: Part Two. Her next role will be as a talented tennis pro turned coach in the erotic thriller, Challengers.

Sydney Sweeny, who plays Cassie, recently made her Saturday Night Live hosting debut this weekend and found success in rom-com, Anyone But You, with Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters stud, Glen Powell. Castmate Jacob Elordi, who plays toxic teen, Nate Jacobs, starred in the provocative Saltburn and is gearing up to be Frankenstein in Guillermo del Toro’s (Pinocchio, The Shape of Water) monster adaptation.

Both seasons and two bonus episodes of Euphoria are available to stream on Max.
