With the true-crime genre still popular with viewers, NBC News’ Peacock Productions is developing a true-crime series that Denise Brown, the sister of Nicole Brown Simpson, will be a part of, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The show has yet to be titled and doesn’t have a release date, but will look into cases where justice may not have been served.
Nicole Brown Simpson’s name dominated headlines in 1994 when her body was discovered alongside her friend, Ron Goldman. The murders prompted a real-life “whodunnit” and Brown Simpson’s ex-husband, O.J. Simpson, was put on trial for the murders, though he ended up being acquitted of all charges.
The popularity in the case was revived this past February when FX aired The People vs. O.J. Simpson, which became the most watched new cable show this television season and even featured ratings surge when a knife that possibly was used in the murder was found on Simpson’s property. In the show, Brown was portrayed by Jordana Brewster.
Melody Shafir, the vice president of development for Peacock Productions, said “Denise has experienced first-hand the complexities of the criminal justice system. She testified on behalf of her sister during one of the most high-profile murder trials in recent history and will draw on that experience throughout the series, with a deep understanding of the impact the system can have on the victim’s family.”
In a statement, Brown said “Peacock Productions’ expertise in the true-crime narrative and unscripted programming is unparalleled. I am excited to begin working with Peacock and tell the stories of lives that have forever been changed by the criminal justice system.”
This isn’t NBC’s only true-crime show in the works. Back in April, NBC and Dick Wolf started developing Law and Order: True Crime, a new true-crime anthology series that’s done by the creator of the Law and Order and Chicago franchises. The first season will focus on the Menendez brothers.
Another true-crime series that’s being developed includes a non-scripted anthology series on CBS, with the first season dealing with the murder of JonBenet Ramsey.
There’s also another series about O.J. Simpson’s trial that’s entitled O.J. is Innocent, which original O.J. prosecutor Marcia Clark slammed.
Since the O.J. Simpson trial, which has been dubbed by many as “the trial of the century,” Brown has worked to bring awareness to domestic violence and founded The Elite Speakers Bureau, which promotes educating people about abuse, mental health and school and workplace safety.
