It’s official, Starz has renewed Outlander for another two seasons, Variety reports.
The book based series starring Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan announced earlier this week that the time-traveling drama would be returning for at least another two seasons on Starz network. The third and fourth seasons will respectively focus on separate novels of the book series written by Diana Gabaldon.
The third season is meant to focus on the third book by Gabaldon Voyager and the fourth season is meant to be based on the fourth book Drums of Autumn. With it appearing that each season is to be based on a novel’s plot, it would seem that Starz is looking optimistically towards a long running series.
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht attributes the success of the show to the fact that it isn’t like other show currently on the air.
“Outlander is like nothing seen before on television.”
The show is centered around a strong female lead character, the breakdown of the Highlander way of living, and the timeless love story between Jamie and Claire. Fans of the books and show become entranced by the story and get swept away in the telling of it.
While Diana Gabaldon brought her vision to life in the books, it’s people like executive producer Ronald D. Moore that has brought her vision to life on the screen.
Nominated for three Golden Globe Awards for it’s first season— Best Drama Series, Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actor— season two has grown from the popularity of season one which started with an average of 5 million viewers per episode. The second season hasn’t concluded as of yet but Moore is already looking towards the third season and the eventual filming of scenes with boats.
Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, Presidents of U.S. Programming and Production, Sony Pictures, acknowledge that,
“The audience has rewarded Outlander with their praise and loyalty, and we know we will deliver the best seasons yet in the years ahead.”
Erlicht and Amburg also attribute the story of Jamie and Claire to be the emotionally complex plot that keeps audiences invested in the show.
With season two still premiering and the third and fourth seasons already guaranteed, fans have a lot to look forward to in the Outlander world.
