New Clips From ‘Doctor Who’ And ‘Sherlock’ Unveiled At Comic-Con

BBC had a big day at Comic-Con where it revealed new clips for two of its most popular shows.

Sherlock and Doctor Who both had new footage released for their upcoming seasons and specials. The Sherlock clip is from the upcoming Christmas special. The first look, which can be watched below, sets the series in the Victorian era for the first time. The show has been based in modern times for its last three seasons.

The Christmas special being set in Victorian times is a nod to the source material which was set during that time. Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Watson are seen wearing what their characters have traditionally been dressed in.

The clip is fairly vague as far as plot goes. It shows Sherlock and Watson returning to London and interacting with their landlady Mrs. Hudson, played by Una Stubbs. Sherlock creator Steven Moffat spoke about how gender politics of the time would influence the special. “One of the problems with the original is the women don’t really speak very much,” Moffat told Comic-Con crowd according to Variety. “Mrs. Hudson barely gets a line.” The clip addresses this issue in a clever, roundabout way.

The special doesn’t have an exact premiere date yet but the expected release time is December. Along with airing on PBS and BBC One, the special will play in select movie theaters, according to Time.

As far as season four of the series goes, Moffat admitted that he hasn’t begun writing it but promises to deliver to fans, according to Variety

Doctor Who fans were given a trailer for the upcoming ninth season of the show. The trailer, which can be watched below, features Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, plenty of monsters, Daleks, and adventure.

In other Doctor Who updates, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams is set to guest star on the show this season but her exact role is left a mystery. Moffat, who is also Doctor Who’s showrunner and lead writer, promised fans that her role would be surprising though, according to VarietyDoctor Who returns to BBC on September 19.

Moffat also joked with Comic-Con attendees about doing a Sherlock/Doctor Who crossover. He said he would have no problem letting the two shows meet but that everyone else working on the hit shows have to reign him in, according to Variety
