The first season of the Atlanta-set action comedy series Teenage Bounty Hunters premiered on Netflix in the middle of August. On October 5th, the show was canceled by the streaming platform, as reported by Deadline.
The inaugural ten-episode season tells the story of teenage fraternal twins Sterling (Maddie Phillips, Ghost Wars) and Blair (Anjelica Bette Fellini, The Gifted), who lead double lives as bounty hunters under the tutelage of grizzled skip tracer Bowser Simmons (Kadeem Hardison, A Different World).
Members of the cast and crew alike have been calling for the show’s renewal on Twitter as early as September. The show’s online fan community has plans to make #PickUpTeenageBountyHunters a trending topic on Twitter on October 6th.
On September 24th, the show’s creator Kathleen Jordan (American Princess, Galactic War Room) participated in fan-run watch party for the last handful of episodes, live-tweeting her reactions and behind-the-scenes tidbits throughout. Once the watch party concluded, she hosted Twitter AMA where she revealed that she and her writers had already started putting together a plan of attack for a prospective second season.
When she was interviewed on The Hollywood Reporter‘s podcast TV’s Top 5, Jordan spoke about the ways that follow-up season would reflect the critical dialogue about racial issues in 2020: “Bounty hunting is obviously part and parcel of a larger criminal problem… The way that we deal with criminal justice in this county is obviously ripe for a change, and so we intend, if we get the opportunity to do a second season, to really explore what it means for Bowser… to be a version of a Black cop… It’s our job to listen and react as artists.” Later in her TV’s Top 5 interview, Jordan extended the conversation around race to the two main characters of Teenage Bounty Hunters: “The show is about two privileged white girls intersecting with parts of the world they would never intersect with if they weren’t in the professional position that they’re in… White privilege, and just privilege in general, is something that we would definitely want to explore as a theme.”
