NBC Renews ‘The Good Place’ For Season 2

Variety reports that NBC voted to keep The Good Place going.

This renewal is especially special, considering it’s the network’s second new series to get an early renewal. Although The Good Place had high critical appeal, it did fall a little short in ratings week to week, averaging a 1.9 rating out of the key demographic adults 18-49. These ratings are starkly in contrast to the other critical success NBC renewed, the tearjerking This Is Us, which have raked in viewers since its inception.

However, as any fan could tell you as they watched the season one finale, this show was begging for a season two. A high-concept comedy that performs a flawless twist while pulling at the heartstrings? Definitely a keeper.

Variety’s critic Maureen Ryan agreed in her column about The Good Place‘s season finale, where she wrote, “The two-part finale was especially crisp and entertaining. And as I write this, it’s hard not to recall that our nation, like these characters, stand poised at a moral crossroads. I don’t know about you, but I feel grateful for a show that is, at its heart, so sincere and earnest while also very focused on its mission to entertain. We need that.”

Season two is slotted to have another thirteen episode season. The Entertainment president of NBC, Jennifer Salke, only had enthusiastic words for the series: “Mike Schur has always had one of the most fertile and imaginative minds in comedy, but what he brought us with the first season of The Good Place was just extraordinary. We absolutely can’t wait to see where these characters go, literally, in season two. A big thank you to Mike, the writers and cast for delivering a series in which we all take such enormous pride.”
