Marvel’s ‘Moon Knight’ Series Casts ‘Ramy’ Star May Calamawy

Bahraini actress, May Calamawy has been cast in the upcoming new Marvel series Moon Knight premiering on Disney+ next year, according to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter.  Calamawy is best known for her role on the comedy-drama series Ramy, where she portrays Dena Hassan, sister of the title sake Ramy Hassan, played by Golden Globe winning actor and executive producer, Ramy Youssef.

The Emmy nominated Hulu series, Ramy focuses around an American Muslim-Arab family navigating the complexities of their politically divided New Jersey neighborhood and cultural community. Last summer, Variety reported the series has been green lit for 10-episode third season. Calamawy is reported by The Hollywood Reporter to appear in, Together Together, an indie Comedy starring Ed Helms, set to release later this month. She has also appeared in series like The Brave and Nat Geo’s The Long Road Home.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, award winning writer and director, Mohamed Diab, who was behind the Middle Eastern drama Clash, along with The Endless’ sci-fi horror filmmaking team Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, are set to direct the Disney+ series. 

The Moon Knight first appeared in Marvel’s comics in 1975. The story according to, Marvel.com, is about Marc Spector, a Boxer, Marine turned CIA operative. After growing weary of the CIA’s practices and objectives, Spector turned into a gun for hire. Betrayal plagues his life and the last betrayal of his closest confidants, left him next to dead in the middle in the Egyptian desert. Spector finds himself at the foot of Egyptian deity Khonsu. Who saves his life. He then returned to the United States as the costumed avenger, Moon Knight. 

The Marvel Studios original series for Disney+ centers on the character Marc Spector aka Moon Knight, complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. These multiple identities who live inside him are distinct characters in the series and will appear against a backdrop of Egyptian iconography.” – via Marvel.com

Dissociative identity disorder, Egyptian iconography and questionable morals all come together in the new Disney+ show. The series is previously reported to star Oscar Isaac as the title role. Donning the cape, crescent blades and mysterious hood, the Guatemalan-born American actor is no stranger to the Disney/Marvel family. Isaac is well known for his roles in blockbusters like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker and X-Men: Apocalypse. Outside of the Disney corporate umbrella Isaac is also well known for his roles in movies like Ex Machina, Annihilation, Metal Gear Solid and Dune.
