Blacki-ish star Marsai Martin and Walden Media (The Chronicles of Narnia, Holes, The Baby-Sitters Club) are adapting the novel Savvy for television, according to Deadline. Savvy is a children’s fantasy novel written by Ingrid Law.
The plot follows Mibs Beaumont before her 13th birthday. For the Beaumont family, turning 13 means discovering what their own supernatural power is. Her grandfather can move mountains, and her brothers have the ability to cause hurricanes and create electricity. Mibs is less than thrilled when she discovers that she can read minds.
Martin’s production company, Genius Entertainment, will be developing the series with Walden Media. Savvy was published by Penguin Random House and Walden Media in 2008.
In 2011, Elizabeth Chandler (The Sisterhood of The Travelling Pants) was hired to write the script for the adaptation, but the story was never picked up.
Martin has received seven NAACP Image Awards and 2 BET Awards for her role in Black-ish. She also made history as the youngest executive producer on a major Hollywood film. Martin not only was EP on the film Little, she also developed, pitched, and starred in the movie.
