In 2018, the supernatural detective series Lucifer was saved after being cancelled by Fox, moving to Netflix for what was advertised as the show’s “fifth and final season.” Now, report from Deadline suggests that the fifth season may not be the end for Lucifer.
Though nothing official has been announced, the Deadline report suggests that Netflix is currently in talks with Warner Bros. about having the show return for an additional season. “Executive producers Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson, who have been steering the show, would need to make a new deal but would like to do another season,” Deadline states. “The plan is for Lucifer to go back into production in September.” The series would presumably need the original cast including lead actor Tom Ellis to return, but many of the actors have already been approached with new opportunities. “Netflix and WBTV would need to step up their efforts to secure the actors,” Deadline confirms.
When Lucifer was confirmed for one final season on Netflix, the producers behind the series expressed their satisfaction with the show’s trajectory: “We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms,” Modrovich and Henderson stated. However, due to the success of Lucifer, it would not be unreasonable for Netflix to extend the show’s life a bit longer. Lucifer currently has 77 episodes over the course of its 5 seasons, making it one of the longest-running shows owned by Netflix, alongside Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.
Lucifer was initially picked up by Netflix after being cancelled by Fox in May of 2018. Following the show’s cancellation announcement, it began trending online, and the fan support encouraged Warner Bros. to find a new home for the show in a story reminiscent of shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and One Day at Time. Netflix has already brought Lucifer back from the dead once before; whether it will do so again remains a mystery.
