ITV & Netflix Crime Series ‘Marcella’ Picked Up For A Second Season

Marcella is getting a second season.

Deadline reports that ITV and Netflix have ordered a second season of the Scandinavian/British noir series. The eight-part second season is set to air next year on ITV in the UK first, and will then be available worldwide on Netflix. The announcement was made at the Edinburgh TV Festival. Netflix acquired the rights to the series earlier this year.

Marcella, created by Hans Rosenfeldt (The Bridge/Bron) and Nicola Larder, spent its first season focusing on British Metropolitan Police detective Marcella (Anna Friel) and her return to a serial-murder investigation after a 10-year hiatus. Marcella gets called upon to join the investigation right as her husband unexpectedly leaves her and their two kids and disappears.

The series also stars Laura Carmichael, Ray Panthaki, Nina Sosanya, Nicholas Pinnock, Sinead Cusack, Charlie Covell, Jack Doolan, Jamie Bamber, Harry Lloyd, Patrick Baladi and Tobias Santelmann. Rosenfeldt and Larder executive produce the series along with Tony Wood.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rosenfeldt spoke to the Edinburgh TV Festival crowd about his writing process for the series. He told the audience that he writes in Swedish for the first three drafts of his scripts before submitting the script in English.

Rosenfeldt also spoke about what fans can expect from season 2.

“I was delighted at the reaction to the first season and am thrilled to be revisiting Marcella for ITV,” Said Rosenfeldt. “In the second season, the audience will get the opportunity to spend more time in her world, further exploring some of the characters and getting to know them better.”

Marcella has been a hit for ITV, raking in an average of 6.8 million viewers. Buccaneer Media, the company that produced season one of the series, will also produce season two.
