HBO’s Emmy-nominated comedy, Insecure, will begin its final season in October. According to The New York Post, creator, executive producer, and star, Issa Rae (The Photograph, The Love Birds), posted the fifth season will debut in two months on the show’s Instagram page Monday morning.
Posting a photo as the show’s lead, Issa, Rae stated: “The wait is almost over. The final season. October 💜.” The announcement elicited joy from hundreds of fans who had been pandering for a date ever since the show wrapped filming the series back in June, according to The New York Post.
According to The New York Post, the half-hour comedy premiered in October of 2016 and has explored adulting in your mid-30s through the eyes of Rae’s character, a woman loosely based on herself. Adapted from Rae’s original YouTube web series, The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl, the show follows Issa and her close-knit group of friends balancing work, sex, breakups, and makeups in Los Angeles. The series also stars Jay Ellis (Escape Room, The Game) as Issa’s friend and ex, Lawrence; Yvonne Oriji (Vacation Friends, Night School) as Issa’s best friend, Molly; Amanda Seales (Amanda Seales: I Be Knowin, The Real) as new-wife-and-mother, Tiffany; and, Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus, Wonder Woman: 1984) as the comically honest friend, Kelli.
The fourth season wrapped with Issa at an impasse as two of her most important relationships were met with some unforeseeable challenges. Will she make the decision to do the work with Molly to improve their friendship? Is she comfortable with being with Lawrence as he welcomes another woman’s child into the world? No one will know until these final episodes hit TV screens.
“Prentice [Penny] and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end,” Rae told Deadline. We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience,” Rae stated via Deadline.
Those who think this is the last of Rae haven’t kept up with the news lately. The multi-hyphenated actress has multiple projects in the works via her overall deal with WarnerMedia including the HBO Max unscripted series, Sweet Life: Los Angeles, and the upcoming comedy, Rap Sh*t.
