‘Superman Returns’ Star Brandon Routh Set to Lead Netflix’s ‘Magic: The Gathering’

According to the Hollywood ReporterSuperman Returns star Brandon Routh will headline the upcoming Netflix fantasy, Magic: The Gathering. Routh is set to play Gideon, an unfaltering heroic Planeswalker in the Magic universe.

Based on the popular tabletop game, the new anime will involve fan-favorite Planeswalkers, along with introducing new characters in the story. The series was picked up straight to series in 2019, and Jeff Klein (Transformers Prime) will executive produce, who replaced original showrunners Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame).

Scripts have already been completed for the first season with Steve Meleching (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) attached as the story editor and co-executive producer. Also on the team behind the series are writers Nicole Dubuc (Transformers Prime), Russell Sommer (Bleeding Kansas), Dan Frey (The Future is Yours), and Teneka Scotts (Craig of the Creek), supervising director Audu Paden (Monster High), and Izzy Medrano as the art director, via Variety.

The original game, created by Richard Garfield, was first released in 1993. The franchise has spawned a digital game, esports league, comic books, and a best-selling novel. Django Wexler, author of The Thousand Names series, will pen a novel that will come out in 2022 in conjunction with the new series.

Routh noted his excitement for the series in a video announcing his involvement during the Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Showcase 2021 stream, saying how he used to play Magic: The Gathering when he was 16.

Magic: The Gathering will be released in late 2022, streaming exclusively on Netflix.
