Season four of the Emmy-winning Hulu original series The Handmaid’s Tale arrives on the platform on April 28, as reported by Thrillist. Season three came to close in the summer of 2019, Forbes reports. Hulu posted the first full-length trailer for season four on March 30, and fans are already eagerly awaiting all the surprises the dystopian drama has in store when it returns. The Handmaid’s Tale is a speculative fiction series based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood (Alias Grace, The Blind Assassin). It is narrated from the point of view of Offred A.K.A. June (Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men), working woman who gets separated from her her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle, The First Lady) and daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake, Good Witch), and gets forced into life of sexual servitude as a “handmaid” in a theocratic caste society known as Gilead, TV Line reports.
Season three ended with June successfully facilitating the escape of a multitude of youths who were being held captive in Gilead, according to Entertainment Weekly. Unfortunately, June herself suffered major bullet wound as she strove to evacuate the girls and was last seen in the woods being cared for by fellow handmaids, as reported by TV Line.
The upcoming fourth season reportedly sees June on the run from the Gilead authorities, seeking vengeance on her backward-thinking enemies, and attempting reconciliation with Luke, Thrillist reports. The trailer additionally suggests the possibility of June encountering Hannah, as well as Nick Blaine (Max Minghella, The Social Network), the biological father of June’s baby daughter Holly. Furthermore, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series creator and showrunner Bruce Miller (The 100, Higher Ground) disclosed that Mckenna Grace (Designated Survivor, Troop Zero), Zawe Ashton (Wanderlust, Velvet Buzzsaw) and Reed Birney (The Blacklist, The Hunt) are playing brand-new characters whose paths cross with June’s. “It’s been great to be able to… build characters. Because June is moving through new world… Who do you interact with, and who do you trust? So the guest players have been so important this season,” Miller imparted, via The Hollywood Reporter.
The Handmaid’s Tale was renewed for season five during Disney’s Investor Day presentation in December 2020, as reported by Deadline. Hulu has allegedly already agreed to produce and distribute sequel series based on Atwood’s 2019 novel The Testaments, which is set a little over a decade after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
