Hilary Duff Asks Disney to Move ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reboot to Hulu

Hilary Duff is seeking a new streaming service for the Lizzie McGuire reboot, reports Jackson, Mississippi’s ABC affiliate WAPT. The original series, which aired on Disney Channel from 2001 to 2004, followed the titular middle school student, played by Duff. The rebooted series will follow a 30-year-old Lizzie.

The Lizzie McGuire reboot was originally set to stream on Disney+, but Duff has affirmed she believes the streaming service does not best fit the series. According to the actress, Disney+’s family-friendly image would not be ideal for a series about the “real and relatable” experiences of a 30-year-old woman.

In an Instagram post, Duff her doubts about having the Lizzie McGuire reboot stream on Disney+. “Was incredibly excited to launch Lizzie on D+ and my passion remains,” wrote Duff. “However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with Lizzie who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”

Duff suggested moving the series to Hulu, which is also owned by Disney. “It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again,” she wrote.

Disney suspended production of the rebooted series in January. “We paused production on Lizzie McGuire a few weeks ago to allow time for some creative re-development,” said the company in a statement Saturday. “Our goal is to resume production and to tell an authentic story that connects to the millions who are emotionally invested in the character, and a new generation of viewers too.”

Production of the Lizzie McGuire reboot is currently unfinished, and the premiere date for the series is unknown as of yet.
