Netflix Announces Deal with ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Showrunner Steve Blackman

The streaming giant Netflix has announced that Steve Blackman, executive producer and showrunner for Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, has been signed to a multi-year deal, according to Deadline. Nothing concrete has been released about the deal’s details, yet it suggests Blackman will be involved in future Netflix projects. The producer has had past work experience at Netflix before The Umbrella Academy with his role as executive producer on the science fiction series, Altered Carbon. Blackman and Netflix’s deal will keep the showrunner at the helm of his series while also enabling him to write and produce other projects under the streaming platform and his Borderline Entertainment company.

With the surprise success of The Umbrella Academy‘s first season on the streaming platform, the series broke Netflix’s top ten list of 2019’s most popular titles and was one of only three television series (others being Stranger Things and The Witcher) to crack the list. The series follows the stories of seven adopted superhuman siblings reuniting after their adoptive billionaire father dies. The series is based on a collection of comic books with the same name and stars Ellen Page (Juno and Inception) and Tom Hopper (Black Sails and Merlin). In addition to this streaming success, Blackman has established himself with past producer and writing credits for series such as Bones, Fargo, and Legion. Blackman has been capable of developing and creating shows across various genres and networks and has made a home at Netflix with this new deal.

As streaming has become more popular and omnipresent, Netflix has been at the forefront of changing how the world views television and film. The new deal with Blackman signifies there is much for the partnership to explore in future television endeavors.
