Despite it’s massive popularity amongst both fans and critics alike, HBO’s hit Lovecraft Country has not been renewed for a second season. The chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max, Casey Bloys, spoke to TVLine about the reason a potential season two has yet to be announced.
Bloys stated that Misha Green (writer, Underground), the showrunner for Lovecraft Country, “and her writers are currently, as we speak, trying to figure out what Season 2 would look like. Remember, Season 1 was based on a book, so you’ve got a roadmap. And especially for a show that is this big, to have that mythology and that roadmap is really, really helpful.” (TVLine)
Lovecraft Country is based on the 2016 best-selling novel by Matt Ruff (author, The Mirage), which combines fantasy and horror elements set in the deep south during the Jim Crow era. The book was adapted by HBO into a ten-part series which began airing August 16, 2020.
While the finale of the first season aired in October 2020, the upcoming awards seasons has brought renewed interest to the show. Lovecraft Country has been nominated for Best Television Series in the Drama category at the 2021 Golden Globes, according to TVLine. The series has additionally been nominated for SAG award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and recently won the AFI Award for TV Program of the Year, according to the show’s IMDb page. Lovecraft Country’s ensemble is comprised of a long list of talent including Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey), Jonathan Majors (The Last Black Man in San Fransisco), Aunjanue Ellis (Ray), Jaime Chung (Gotham) and Wunmi Mosaku (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).
HBO’s main concern for a second season of Lovecraft Country seems to be making sure it’s something both the writers and fans will be satisfied with. “So we, and Misha, want to be really sure that there’s a story she feels good about that we feel good about,” Bloys commented. “I am very hopeful that she’ll crack a story.” (TVLine)
