HBO has granted a season order to limited series, The Palace, produced and starring Academy Award winner and two-time Emmy winner Kate Winslet (Ammonite), according to Deadline. The series will reportedly cover the unraveling of an authoritarian regime within its first year of imposition.
Winslet recently starred and executive produced the HBO limited series, Mare of Easttown. The series won four Emmy Awards, including win for Winslet as the title character. In 2011, Winslet also won an Emmy for playing the title character in HBO’s limited series, Mildred Price. Last month, HBO announced that Winslet would return to the network to star and produce a limited series based on Hernan Diaz’s 2022 novel, Trust, per The Hollywood Reporter. The Palace would mark Winslet’s fourth limited series with HBO.
Winslet will produce The Palace alongside creators Stephen Frears, Frank Rich, and Will Tracy. Frears’s credits include ITV/AMC’s Quiz and the Emmy Award-nominated A Very British Scandal. Frears won an Emmy Award in 2019 for his work on the first season of the Sundance anthology series, State of the Union, which starred Rosamund Pike (The Wheel of Time) and Chris O’Dowd (Get Shorty).
Rich recently served as an executive producer on the HBO series Veep and Succession, series that won him a combined four Emmy awards. Rich will also executive produce the upcoming HBO series, The White House Plumbers, which will follow the Watergate scandal.
Tracy is also heavily involved with HBO programming, serving as a writer, executive producer, and actor on Succession and a writer on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Tracy has won four Emmy awards through projects with HBO.
Winslet is also set to star in the upcoming film, Lee, based on the life of photojournalist and fashion model Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller. Winslet will star alongside Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (Two Days One Night), Jude Law (The Third Day), Josh O’Connor (The Crown), Andrea Riseborough (ZeroZeroZero), and Emmy Award winner Andy Samberg (Palm Springs). Academy Award nominee Ellen Kuras (Brave New World) will direct.
In a statement to Deadline, Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, commented on the series order. She stated, “we are honored to be working with this incredibly talented group of filmmakers on The Palace. The notion that Kate Winslet and Stephen Frears, two of our industry’s leading lights, who – remarkably – have never collaborated before now, are joining forces to bring Will Tracy’s wildly original, prescient, and dazzling scripts to life at HBO is a dream come true for us.”
HBO has yet to set a release date for The Palace.
