HBO Announces Season Two Premiere Date of ‘City of God: The Fight Rages On’ with Official Trailer Release

The official trailer for season two of City of God: The Fight Rages On (Cidade de Deus: A Luta Não Para) has released. City of God is a HBO Original series.

City of God is one of the most watched series across the U.S and Latin America, with the premiere of the series released, back in 2024. After the first episode of season one was released, five days later, an official announcement of the season two renewal was made, even before the next episode aired. City of God is also continuation of the 2002 film of the same name, directed by Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener, Blindness). The film City of God has grossed over 30 million dollars globally.

The City of God series is set 20 years after the events of the original film. City of God shows how violence, drugs, and corruption of police and militias affects the community, centered in the slums of Rio de Janeiro.

Season two will explore how the community involved reacts and resists to the ongoing violence and overall effects from the political corruption and crime. Matheus Nachtergaele (The Rogue’s Trial, Get the Goat), who played as Cenoura in the City of God film, was also announced to return for season two of the series. His character will return to his community, following his release from prison.

City of God is directed by Aly Muritiba (Private Desert, Jesus Kid). Credited to produce the show is Andrea Barata Ribeiro (Marighella, 7 Prisoners) and Meirelles. Co-producing the show is Cris Abi (Beast Race, Trash) and Gustavo Gontijo (Under Pressure, Second Call). Maíra Oliveira (Aruna’s Magic, Rich in Love 2) and Paulo Lins (Almost Brothers, Orfeu) are recognized as the writers of the show. Filming for the season two of the series was completed in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

The main cast set to return for season two consist of Alexandre Rodrigues (Forbidden to Forbid, Christabel) as Wilson Rodrigues, Roberta Rodrigues (Rules of the Game, End of the Line) as Berenice Aguiar, Sabrina Rosa (Lets Make A Toast, Brothers in Faith) as Cinthia Braga, and Andréia Horta (Elis, Alice) as Jerusa Rocha.

Reoccurring cast members set to return for season two as well are Dhonata Augusto (Bach in Brazil, Suburbia) as Delano Braga, Luellem de Castro (Reality Z, Wedding Games) as Leka Rodrigues, Kiko Marques (A Mensageira, Pure Beauty) as Reginaldo Cavani, Victor Andrade (A Madrasta, A Protegida) as Genis, Rafael Lozano (Pink Pact, The Great Mystical Circus) as Israel, Shirley Cruz (Lavender, Mel) as Martinha, Carol Dall Farra (To Speak Her Mind, Vicky e a Musa) as Cidão, and Otavio Linhares (I’m Still Here, Casa Izabel) as Touro.

The first episode of the second season of City of God will premiere on HBO Latino in the U.S and will be available to stream globally Sunday, November 8th on HBO Max. The premiere of the second season will consist of six episodes, similar to season one of the series, and each new episode will be released weekly on Sundays.

City of God will also have a special showing of the first episode of the new season, during the 28th Rio Film Festival At Cine Odeon on Friday, October 9th. Episode one of season two of City of God will premiere during the festival’s special showcase series with the directors, cast, and producers being in attendance.

Viewers can catch up on the series before the premiere of the upcoming new second season. There are currently six episodes out from season one of the hit series City of God, and all six episodes are available to stream now on HBO Max.
