After the parent company of HBO, WarnerMedia, merged with Discovery in April of this year, HBO Max’s content account has been increasing to cut costs, donating to the cancellation of shows such as Minx, FBoy Island, and Love Life and also movies like Batgirl. In post on George R.R. Martin’s (Beauty and the Beast, The Twilight Zone) blog made on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, some of his planned shows in the Game of Thrones universe have been “shelved” at HBO Max, according to Variety.
“Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly,” said the author, via Collider.
The spinoff that is extracting the most anticipation from Game of Thrones fans is a sequel series that is expected to follow Kit Harington’s (Pompeii, Eternals) Jon Snow, while projects focusing on House of the Dragon’s Sea Snake character and a prequel series following the origins of the Dorne are also proclaimed to be in development at the streaming service, according to ComicBook.
The spinoff focusing around Jon Snow was pitched by Harrington himself, according to Collider. The spinoff features the story of Jon Snow after he headed north of The Wall in the series finale.
The spinoff focusing around Sea Snake will follow Lord Corlys Velaryon, portrayed by Steve Toussaint (Before We Die, The Knock), and the pilot script is penned by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Pennyworth).
According to Collider, there are six Game of Thrones spinoffs that are currently in some stage of development.
In addition, we have 10,000 Ships, from Amanda Segel (Person of Interest, Big Momma’s House) that will feature Dorne’s Princess Nymeria. We also have The Tales of Dunk and Egg, which is based on a series of Martin’s novellas, and two animated series, one of which is titled The Golden Empire and will follow the Yi Ti dynasty of Essos, according to Collider.
