George R.R. Martin Confirms That Dragons Will Appear in the Targaryens-Based ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel on HBO

Game of Thrones co-executive producer George R.R. Martin joined Colony co-creator/executive producer Ryan Condal to create another Game of Thrones prequel series for HBO. However, a pilot order has not been confirmed.

“I do want to point out that ‘moving closer to a pilot order’ is NOT the same thing as ‘getting a pilot order,’” Martin said. “Would that it were. This is encouraging, this is exciting, but don’t buy the couch just yet. When HBO actually gives us a pilot order, you will hear me shouting it from the rooftops. A series order, and I’ll be shouting even louder. But we’ll see. Right now all the signs are good, but nothing is confirmed.”

Centered on the Targaryens and based on Martin’s Fire & Blood, the author confirmed that dragons would make an appearance. “I can say that there will be dragons,” Martin said. “Everyone else has said that, so why not me?”

This prequel should not be confused with another Game of Thrones prequel l which features the origin of White Walkers. Martin is involved with both of these projects.

HBO’s President of Programming, Casey Bloys has mentioned in the past before that the network will not revolve around a Game of Thrones universe and instead will give other shows a chance as well to tell their stories.

“I don’t want HBO to become a network that airs just Game of Thrones or Game of Thrones prequels,” Bloys explained. “It should be said that Game of Thrones has been an incredible show for us but what we’re doing is a much more diversified slate so that we’re not in a position that we have to get the Game of Thrones franchise up and running or the lights are going out at HBO. That is not the situation and it never has been.”

No further details have been given for the second prequel.
