A new medical drama is in development for CBS. Entitled Good Sam, the series hails from writer Katie Wech and tells the story of a surgeon who must embrace her inner-leader when her snobbish boss falls into a coma. When he wakes up and insists on returning to work as a surgeon, she takes up the task of supervising him. This job is complicated by the fact that he refuses to recognize her talents, and to top everything off he happens to be her dad.
In addition to writing, Wech will executive produce Good Sam alongside Jennie Snyder Urman and Joanna Klein of Sutton St. Productions.
At the moment, CBS is the last remaining of the Big 4 broadcast networks to have no medical drama on the air. This being said, Good Sam will not be the first show to be set in hospital at CBS. Carol’s Second Act, a comedy set in a hospital, is scheduled to premiere later this month. In the past, CBS has only had one medical series, Code Black. The show ended in 2018 after three seasons.
Wech is not new to the television industry by any means. She wrote and executive produced The Hypnotists’ Love Story for ABC, high-profile pilot that featured actress Heather Graham. She has also worked on Jane the Virgin, an acclaimed comedy on The CW, as a writer and executive producer. Her resume is further padded by credits such as BH90210, Star, and Rizzoli & Isles. Wech is represented by Verve and Stone Genow.
Earlier in the week, Variety reported that Urman is producing a different drama that is currently being developed for The CW. Another alum from Jane the Virgin will join her on this venture, which is based on “The Archived” YA novels and follows sisters who were brought up in a family that hunts ghosts.
