The A Song of Ice and Fire novelist George R.R. Martin has announced that he is making great progress in writing a new book for his literary fantasy world in Winds of Winter, according to CNN. Martin’s series of novels received further recognition by television fans through its adaptation for HBO as the fantasy epic drama Game of Thrones which concluded its eighth and final season in the summer of 2019 and amassed a combined total of 58 Primetime and Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
The novel The Winds of Winter is set to be a continuation of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. There has yet to be released information on the exact nature of the new work’s narrative. However, Martin stated in a tweet that included a lengthy blog post that he has been isolating himself in a cabin in the woods working away at the newest edition to the fantasy novel series. This new piece of work will be the second to last installment of the series before the final novel A Dream of Spring and will be the first published work from Martin since 2011’s A Dance With Dragons. Citing the cabin fever he is experiencing during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, Martin explains that this has led him to dedicate long amounts of time towards the writing process of The Winds of Winter. HBO’s Game of Thrones took its name from the similarly titled first novel of Martin’s series A Game of Thrones and followed the intricacies of claiming the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms in Westeros. The series was adapted from the novels to television by David Benioff (Troy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and D.B. Weiss (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and featured an extensive cast which included Sophia Turner (X-Men), Kit Harrington (7 Days in Hell), Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent), Maisie Williams (Doctor Who), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Black Hawk Down), Lena Headey (Fighting with My Family, 300), and Emilia Clarke (Solo: A Star Wars Story). The series is currently available for streaming in its entirety on the new streaming platform from Warner Media HBO Max and Hulu with an HBO subscription.
