The world of Westeros is varied and plenty.
As any avid nerd will whole-heartedly tell you, Game of Thrones is more than just a fantasy series. It is a modern day epic, with detailed world-building passages that outlines everything from a mythical background to every freckle on a young maester’s nose.
Fans of the book series have been thrilled to see the book series adapted for HBO, but is there more to the bloodthirsty story?
According to George R.R. Martin at this year’s Emmy awards, there just may be talk of a prequel in the works:
“I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones, so there’s a lot of material there and I’m writing more. At the moment we still have this show to finish and I still have two books to finish so that’s all speculation.”
And indeed, it may be slow-going for our Game of Thrones prequel. Martin is still making his way through the Winds of Winter draft, which will be the sixth in the series. This sixth book was announced back in 2010 and is still unreleased, so we might have to put that on the back burner for now. The last season of HBO’s Game of Thrones actually had the momentous occasion of eclipsing and surpassing the written material it is based on, but of course showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss received information and blessings from Martin as they went through production.
The showrunners have also addressed talk of a prequel, but were a tad more standoffish than Game of Thrones‘ original creator:
“It’s a great world that George created,” said David Benioff, “I think it’s a very rich world, and I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us, this is it.”
This most certainly is it. Whether or not Martin publishes the final two novels of Game of Thrones, the HBO series is already beginning its highly-publicized ending, which may be why fans are so eager to jump on to news of a prequel. The families and universe of Game of Thrones are so vivid that we’re calling for anything that could place us in that storytelling capital again.
