Streaming on Hulu, the second season of FX’s Adults was major step-up this year and it has ended with two surprising twists. From Entertainment Weekly, they have shared that these changes for the characters will be something to work on by co-creators, Ben Kronengold (Adults, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) and Rebecca Shaw (Wax Paul Now, There’s Something About my Sister), for next season.
The whole series is focused on the struggles of growing up and choices in romantic partners between five friends. Now the new struggles after the finale will be the group’s friendships and how they will react to these changes, mainly the new romantic pairings. One of the shocking couple twists is that Anton (Owen Thiele) and Paul Baker (Jack Innanen) have become a couple in the second season finale. The audience has waited for this hookup since last season’s finale with both characters sharing a kiss in front of their friends. They have shared again a kiss for this season with a promise of a new relationship between the two.
The other twist was completely unexpected from Samir (Malik Elassal) and Billie (Lucy Freyer). After Samir broke up with his girlfriend Carly (Rachel Marsh), he is consoled by Billie. Later, they are found behind a closed door sharing a kiss. This decision for other two main cast members to be a couple was surprising. It seems to be out of character for Billie and Samir to hookup.
The creators haven’t discussed on what to go further with these changes. Shaw has replied on Entertainment Weekly that “we’re leaving two people who acted on something that felt right and felt right in the moment, but who, probably, have a lot of questions on the other side of it.” Though Kronengold and Shaw reveal there will be more ideas to come for future storylines for the group of friends, it is up to the audience to decide whether this relationship is going to be a long shot or a monumental fling.
