Mayans M.C. makes its heralded return to FX on March 16, and fans of the Sons of Anarchy spin-off have already been graced with the first trailer in advance of the season three premiere, as reported by Comic Book. On February 22, ninety-second trailer arrived on the network’s official YouTube channel, where it garnered approximately half a million views in twenty-four hours. Those intimately familiar with Mayans M.C.‘s parent show Sons of Anarchy have noted the appearance of the titular motorcycle club’s vest on suffocation victim in the trailer, Pop Culture reports. Frame-by-frame investigation reveals a patch displaying the rank of Road Captain, last seen on Alessandro “Domingo” Montez (Jacob Vargas, Tarantula). Montez’s line in the trailer, “One wrong move could start war,” may refer to the moment in the season two finale when it is revealed that the Santo Padre Mayans accidentally killed a yet-unidentified member of the Sons of Anarchy during their attack on a gathering of the Vatos Malditos Motorcycle Club, according to TV Line.
That shocking season two finale aired all the way back in November 2019, Deadline reports. The promotional rollout for season three began in the first week of February 2021 with brief teaser posted on the show’s official Instagram account that additionally established the season premiere air date.
Mayans M.C.‘s third season is the first thus far that does not feature creative contributions from former showrunner Kurt Sutter (The Bastard Executioner, Southpaw), who was fired from the production in October 2019, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Co-creator Elgin James (Lowriders, Little Birds) has since taken on Sutter’s role. In an interview with Deadline, Sutter claimed that he planned to cede his responsibilities to James in season three even before his firing as way to cope with his own anxieties concerning the show’s scriptwriting process. “I knew that a white guy shouldn’t be the voice of a Latin culture drama… My plan was to hand off the day-to-day [duties] to Elgin by season three, and drop back into a hands-off producer role… It was becoming more and more difficult for me to run this show. I was burned out, uninspired,” he revealed, via Deadline.
James reportedly shifted the focus of Mayans M.C. season three from gangland politics to the club members’ personal histories and vulnerabilities: “The ghosts of the past come calling for all of the M.C., both individually and as a club, from past loss[es] and loves, to the dead SOA member buried in the Mexican desert… This is the season we get to know these characters beyond the kutte [vest],” via Entertainment Weekly.
