Freeform Cancels ‘Cloak and Dagger’

Another live-action Marvel TV show has been canceled. Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger has not been renewed for a third season.

It’s been five months since the season two finale of Cloak and Dagger. During that time, the big question has been if the show was going to come back for a third season? In August, it was reported that there would be a crossover between Cloak and Dagger and Hulu’s Runaways. This news gave fans a spark of hope that the Freeform show would live to see another season. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

In a statement to Deadline, Freeform said, “We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”

Yesterday, showrunner Joe Pokaski expressed his frustrations and love for the show via twitter, “So, yeah. There are parts of me that feel gut-punched or angry at larger corporate forces, but the biggest feeling I have in my heart right now, by far, is pride. I’m so fucking proud with what we got to do on #Cloakanddagger.” Pokaski’s twitter thread took fans on a journey from the conception of the show to his parting feelings.

This is not Pokaski’s first canceled show with Marvel. Pokaski’s wrote two episodes for Netflix’s Daredevil before becoming the showrunner of Cloak and Dagger. As of February of 2019, Netflix canceled all of its Marvel shows.

After four years and almost 200 hours worth of content, fans were disheartened to know that the story of the Defenders would not be moving forward. Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel TV, penned letter to fans after Netflix announced that The Punisher would not be getting another season:

“Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.

As Matthew Murdock’s Dad once said, ‘The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it’s how he gets back up.’

To be continued…!”

As for now, any character featured in a Netflix show has a two-year hold before Marvel can use them on screen again. Since Marvel and Freeform have the same owner, there is a good chance fans could see Tandy and Tyrone sooner rather than later. So, is there hope that the hero’s of Cloak and Dagger, Tandy and Tyrone, will live on in another show as well? Pokaski certainly thinks so.

Tandy and Tyrone will appear in Hulu’s Runaways season three, which drops December 13.
