The upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight, based on the titular Marvel comic book character, will be an action-packed affair and highlight elements of mental health, according to Comicbook. President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige released few statements concerning the series. “It’s been a while since we’ve had an action hero who jumps out of buildings and gets into fights,” Feige stated as reported by Comicbook. Feige went on to mention that a unique aspect of the show is its commentary on mental health.
Not much has been released concerning Moon Knight other than Mohamad Diab (Cairo 678) will be the director, it will star Oscar Isaac (Poe, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and it will begin filming in 2021. Although Isaac hasn’t revealed whether he will be stepping into the lead role of Moon Knight, fans speculate that he will. The reason behind the lack of new developments is most likely caused by Covid-19, “Marvel hasn’t delivered much due to the forced delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic,” as stated by Comicbook.
In 1975, Don Perlin and Doug Moench created a character named Marc Spector who would eventually dawn the role of Moon Knight. Marc Spector was a talented boxer who had a falling out with his father one night and ran away to join the marines. After years of service he left the marines to become a mercenary who would work for the C.I.A upon occasion. After Spector had a near death experience on one of his missions in Egypt, followers of an ancient moon god called Khonshu found him and brought him to their temple. At this temple he was gifted with a second life by the deity and reborn as Moon Knight.
After returning to New York, Spector uses this new persona to fight the injustices that plague society. What’s more is that he suffers from dissociative identity disorder so fans of the show will be able to see Spector grapple with the choices of a man haunted by several different voices. This show will have a heavy focus on mental health, providing a unique commentary on what it means to be a vigilante. Unfortunately, Disney has not released a premiere date yet but it is confirmed that the show will be airing exclusively on their streaming service Disney+.
