Many misconceptions about Friday’s season two finale of Disney+’s The Mandalorian were finally clarified today. During an exclusive interview with Good Morning America, showrunner Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Chef) confirmed the teased Boba Fett project is in fact another spinoff series, according to Deadline. At the end of Friday’s episode entitled “Chapter 16: The Rescue,” a post-credits scene returned viewers to Tatooine, specifically the palace of former crimelord Jabba the Hut. Inside we see Jabba’s second-in-command, Bib Fortuna, sitting on the throne with a room of loyal subjects. Suddenly a blaster begins firing, taking out individuals indiscriminately. Ming Na Wen’s (Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D., Mulan) Fennec Shand appears walking down the stairs, firing without hesitation. She even frees an imprisoned blue alien at the feet of the throne. Bib Fortuna is the sole survivor as Boba Fett, played by Temuera Morrison (Once Were Warriors, Aquaman), appears in the lair. Bib’s attempts to appease the bounty hunter’s ego fail as Boba kills him mid-sentence. Boba then proceeds to sit on the throne, with Fennec by his side, as the message “The Book of Boba Fett…Coming December 2021” flashed across the blackened screen. While many assumed this was just a subtitle for season three of The Mandalorian, Favreau dispelled any disputes of the sort.
“This is actually separate from The Mandalorian Season 3,” Favreau stated in the interview via Deadline. “We wanted to hold this back because we didn’t want to spoil the surprise during the big Disney announcement for all the shows.. and so they let me keep this one secret,” Favreau said via Deadline.
According to Deadline, Favreau confirmed The Book of Boba Fett is currently in production with Morrison and Wen starring. Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City), who directed “Chapter 14: The Tragedy” of The Mandalorian, will executive produce along with Dave Filoni (Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Favreau. Favreau also mentioned that season three of The Mandalorian will begin shooting after the completion of the Boba Fett series. The official title screen artwork for the spinoff series was revealed by Disney+ on Twitter.
