Disney+ Hub Star Greenlights ‘The Good Mothers’ Television Series Adaptation

The Good Mothers, an original mafia series coming to Disney+, has been greelit, according to Deadline. The news comes as Disney+ is launching their European slate of films and television shows that will be apart of the international Star hub, which will work similarly to the Pixar or Star Wars hubs that exist on the platform currently.

The series, which has been announced to be made up of six episodes, is based on the book by award winning journalist Alex Perry (The Rift: A New Africa Breaks Free). Like the book, the series will follow how Italian mob leaders’ wives helped prosecutors take down the nefarious men in their lives. Via Deadline, Perry’s novel is based on a true story about the Calbrian ‘Ndrangheta mafia was taken down by a female prosecutor named Alessandra Cerreti.

According to Deadline, Stephan Butchard, writer of The Last Kingdom, has penned pilot script for the series and is working on fleshing out the rest of the series before production can begin. The series will be executive produced by Juliette Howell (producer, Brexit – The Uncivil War) and Tessa Ross (producer, Carol) through House Productions, and Mario Gianani (executive producer, We Are Who We Are) and Lorenzo Gangarossa (producer, Alaska) from Wildside, via Deadline.

The Good Mothers is not the only Italian series to be announced as a Disney+ original. Ignorant Angels, a romantic drama series, and Boris, a show-about-a-show series, have both been ordered by the streamer. While all of these projects are currently in the pre-production stages, they will eventually be included in the Star lineup, which is launching in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia on February 23, according to Screen Rant. Star is intended to be a catch-all for content created for adult audiences and will include many of the ABC and Hulu shows that Disney owns. The hub will not be available to Disney+ subscribers in the U.S. because these titles are available on Hulu, which is majority owned by Disney.
