Carol Burnett Receives Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

The Los Angeles Times reports that Carol Burnett was awarded the prestigious honor on Sunday night at the Kennedy Center.

The ceremony showcased some of comedy’s biggest names as they sang, danced and laughed on stage to honor Burnett. Some of the performing stars included Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short and Vicki Lawrence.

Burnett is most famous for her Saturday night variety show, The Carol Burnett Show, which ran from 1967 to 1978.

Tina Fey, the 2010 recipient of the prize herself, called Burnett “the finest female sketch comedian in American history,” and told Burnett, “I love you in a way that is just shy of creepy.”

Burnett was elated to receive the Mark Twain Prize, saying to the crowd, “I’ve never smoked pot, but I don’t think there could be a better high,” and added, “This is very encouraging, it was a long time in coming, but I understand — because there are so many people funnier than I am, especially here in Washington.”

This is one more of the many prestigious awards for Burnett’s incredible career, including 25 Emmys, a Peabody Award, a number of Golden Globes and, in 2005, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
