Amy Brenneman Joins HBO’s ‘The Leftovers’

Amy Brenneman of ABC’s Private Practice has signed onto HBO’s the Leftovers.

The Leftovers, an adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s book titled the same name, takes place as the rapture happens. The drama tells the story of the people who did not make the cut and shows a world that will never be the same.

Justin Theroux will play Kevin Garvey, police chief and father of two who is trying to maintain some sense of normalcy in a world that is starting to reject that notion, says the Hollywood Reporter. Amy Brenneman will play his wife, Laurie Garvey, who leaves her entire life behind to join a mysterious cult, cutting off ties with her husband and children.

Other cast members include Boardwalk Empire’s Emily Meade, who will play Amy, a high school student who seemingly takes the apocalypse in stride. The Carrie Diaries’ Jake Robinson will play a fellow classmate. Liv Tyler will play Meg, a young woman about to be married but needs an escape. Tyler’s character becomes a target for recruitment by the members of the mysterious cult.

Damon Lindelof will co-write and executive produce the Warner Bros. TV effort, explains the Hollywood Reporter. Other producers include Ron Yerxa, Albert Berger, Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey.

Brenneman is repped by CAA and Mosaic and has appeared in Judging Amy and Frasier. The Leftovers will be her first project since the series end of Private Practice in January.
