Widow’s Bay is one of the breakout comedies of 2026. The series combines two genres that don’t seem to mesh: the sitcom and horror. Series creator Katie Dippold (The Heat, Haunted Mansion) was a writer on Parks and Rec, and she has told Deadline that Widow’s Bay was heavily inspired by her past work on the series. The original concept was actually written as a spec script for Parks and Rec.
The most obvious similarity is the focus on small government. The main character, Tom Loftus, played by Matthew Rhys (The Americans, A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood), is the mayor of a New England island town, and one of the series’ settings is the local town office, populated by several wacky characters. Loftus is determined to turn his town into a prominent tourist destination, but rumors swirl of a curse hovering over the island. Loftus must try to dispel these rumors to portray a picturesque coastal setting to a New York Times travel writer. The only issue is that they are true.
When asked about the inspirations for the series Diploid said, “I used to get into all sorts of antics when I was young, me and my friends going to check out the abandoned house and then running off, and I just love that feeling because you’re so scared, but you’re laughing so hard, and I just wanted to get that feeling on television. So, that’s sort of where it started,”via Deadline.
She continued, “And then eventually, I wrote it as a , but that version was much jokier. It was more comedic, and I think it gave a good idea of my sense of humor. But I don’t know that I would have watched that show, because I think it could have felt more like a spoof, and as a horror fan, I just wanna be immersed into the island. I wanna feel like I’m in New England. I wanna feel like I am isolated, and I wanna feel like I could go explore this island and find all the little nooks and crannies and terrifying little spots. That’s my dream, but I’m strange. So, that’s sort of how it started,” via Deadline.
The series has received widespread critical acclaim, earning a 97 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the first season has ended, fans have more to look forward to as the series has already been renewed for a second season.
